Baseline Modeling
Train accurate models on historical data to capture pre-retrofit building characteristics and energy consumption patterns
The Meval tool trains its underlying model on baseline data to get an accurate description of the pre-retrofit characteristics of the building:

In addition, Meval uses the trained model to compare actual and predicted energy consumption so that users get feedback on it's accuracy.

Why accuracy matters
Although Meval does not adopt a pure prediction-based approach, predictive accuracy still matters. A model that can closely track the energy consumption during the baseline period will not necessarily be able to accurately estimate energy savings, but a model that cannot, will definitely fail to provide trustworthy energy savings estimations.
Meval learns the operating schedule of the tracked HVAC systems. This allows it to tailor its models to each operating regime (setpoint and setback operation), and automatically adapt to changes in the schedule.
